May 10th saw Parliament Street celebrate World Fair Trade Day, with York a hot spot for traders and consumers alike.

This year’s World Fair Trade Day, which took place on the 10 May, looked to ‘Fair Trade People’ celebrating those who produce, sell and buy Fair Trade. York Fair Trade Forum ran a fully Fair Trade market throughout the day, showcasing local retailers who stock Fair Trade certified products and giving the opportunity for locals to find out about what difference Fair Trade makes.

Students from the charity Access to Music and York bank Asois Eyes joined stalls from local Fair Trade retailers including Alligator, Fairer World and Shared Earth to invite people to the day’s celebration. Despite torrential downpours, we met many interested shoppers and are looking forward to having another stall at next year’s market – when hopefully the weather will be kinder!

York gained the accolade of Fair Trade City back in 20o4 and is recognised nationally for its campaigning and support of Fair Trade.
