Fairtrade Fortnight 2020 – She Deserves
This year we will continue the campaign we started in 2019 to demand a Living Income for cocoa
farmers, focused on West Africa.
We want to show companies that people in the UK expect them to go much further to pay living
income prices to farmers – and Fairtrade is the most trusted way to show it.
This Fortnight we’re telling and sharing the stories of women cocoa farmers to make the
case for Fairtrade. We travelled back to Côte d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone, to meet some truly inspiring
women who want their stories to be heard by the UK.
‘She Deserves’ Sofa Sessions
We are hoping to welcome two women cocoa farmers from Cote D’Ivoire to York’s Spurriergate Centre on Thursday 27 February between 6 and 8pm. Their attendance is dependant on their visas being approved, which should be confirmed by the end of January.
Our ‘sofa sessions’, interactive panel discussions will give farmers the opportunity to tell their own stories to a wide, varied audience of local people in York city centre
The aims of these events are to;
1. Share inspiring stories of women in cocoa, the impact of Fairtrade and the ongoing
challenges for invisible women in West Africa.
2. Engage the public and ideally reach new audiences to encourage more people to care about
the bittersweet reality behind our chocolate.
3. Generate media coverage and engage audiences in the She Deserves campaign
4. Bring local communities and new supporters together to hear more about Fairtrade
alongside a wider discussion around gender equality.
