Come along and meet two rice farmers from Malawi.

On a special trip to the UK to explain their work, Howard and Webster are rice farmers from Karonga in northern Malawi. They are the Chair and Vice Chair of KASFA, the local smallholder farmers’ association in Karonga which has around 9000 members.

Their rice is imported to the UK by Just Trading Scotland, whose fair trade, smallholder produced food products, usually from Africa, are sold in Fairer World on Gillygate. JTS has been working with the rice farmers for 10 years to import their aromatic Kilombero rice to the UK.

The farmers will be promoting the 90kg Challenge which represents the amount of rice a Malawian farmer must sell in order to send one child to secondary school. Let’s see if the people of York can buy 90kg of rice and send a Malawian child to school.
